There are a number of small businesses offering canoe and cycle hire as well as pick up services and bespoke tours.

The Turf is one of the very few pubs in the country which cannot be reached by car. Bearing in mind the glorious situation that The Turf occupies, we think it would be a real shame not to enjoy the task of reaching is...Below are 6 different ways!

By Car, by Foot or by Cycle

The nearest car park is 2/3 mile from The Turf, Where there is limited parking available.

Exeter City Council operate a clamping policy in this carpark! Please ensure that you are parked in one of the 19 designated parking bays.

The second car park is by the railway line at the Swans Nest

Both car parks are free of charge and are accessed from the A379 Dawlish road, turning left at the mini roundabout at the end of the Exminster bypass.

Another car park is also found at Powderham Church  (Donations for the upkeep of the churchyard gratefully received). From here a footpath winds it's way alongside the Exe Estuary, enabling you to take in the fabulous views.

There is another car park approx. 3 miles from us located just by the Countess weir swing-bridge

Take a trip on the water

One of the most pleasant ways to reach The Turf is via water. Here are you options

The boat runs at weekends and bank holidays from April and then daily from mid May until mid September. Sea Dream also operates an evening service for larger groups, 20+, by arrangement.

There is another ferry in operation at the river crossing between Ferry Road, Topsham and Topsham Lock cottage. Running every day except Tuesdays from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm (tides permitting). “Shimmer” was funded partly by Exeter City Council, and partly by Devon County Council as part of their funding for the Exe Estuary cycle trail (

Shimmer can carry up to 12 passengers and 8 bicycles. Mike Stevens, the ferryman, also operates an evening service which needs to be pre-arranged.
